Directions to West Burton from the M6, A1 and cross-country from West Yorkshire are also detailed below.
General Directions
The easiest routes are from junctions on either the A1(M) in the east or M6 from the west. Under normal traffic conditions expect a journey of approximately 30 minutes from either motorway to West Burton. To find it on a roadmap, follow the A684 from either motorway, and it is just south of Aysgarth, half way between Leyburn and Hawes. If your car has satellite navigation, most systems recognise West Burton. If not the other nearest locations are Aysgarth and Leyburn. If you wish to print out an on-line street map (eg from www.streetmap.co.uk), the full postal address for both cottages is identical = Back Nook, West Burton, Leyburn, North Yorkshire DL8 4JU.
From the A1
Coming from the north down the A1, leave at the Leeming Bar Services junction (A684), which is after the two Catterick exits. At the exit the road loops around and you come to a T-junction (with a garden centre opposite in front of you). Turn left and join the A684 towards Bedale.
Coming from the south up the A1, leave at the Leeming Bar Services junction (A684), which is the next major junction after the A61 to Ripon. At the exit go past the services (which includes McDonalds/petrol station) and come to a T-junction. Turn left and join the A684 towards Bedale.
Once on the A684, the journey is approximately 30 minutes from here. Note that there is a 24-hour Texaco petrol station approximately half a mile ahead on the left. Follow the road through Aiskew crossing the railway line into Bedale. Come to a T-junction and turn right which takes you through Bedale market place and out of the town. Continue on the A684 through Crakehall, Patrick Brompton, Constable Burton, Harmby and into Leyburn.
In Leyburn, as you come into the market place, come to a mini-roundabout (Bolton Arms in front of you). Turn left, continuing on A684 out of town, through Wensley, West Witton and Swinithwaite. As you leave Swinithwaite you will next pass ‘Temple Farm’, noticeable because it straddles the road. Immediately after the farm, the road drops down a hill & take the next left turn, signposted B6160 Kettlewell. The West Burton sign is only at the left turn, not before. (If you arrive at Aysgarth you have missed the turning so turn around & retrace your steps).
Now on the B6160, following this road for about 1 mile, then you will enter the village boundary of West Burton. As the B6160 bends sharply to the right, leave the B6160 and go straight ahead into the village.
From the M6
Take Junction 37 from the M6 and follow the A684 east through Sedbergh, Garsdale Head, Appersett, Hawes and into Bainbridge. You will come to a T-junction, turn right still on the A684 towards Aysgarth/Leyburn. Continue through Aysgarth village. As you go slightly downhil, pass the turning left to Aysgarth Falls, and a few yards further on, take the next turning on your right signposted West Burton. Follow this tightly meandering road for approx 1 mile. Come to a T-junction. Turn right and a few yards further on, the main road (B6160) takes a sharp turn to the right, but go straight ahead into the village.
From West Yorkshire area
From all major towns in West Yorkshire go to Skipton (egA65 from Leeds, A650 from Bradford). From Skipton take the B6265 towards Grassington. Just before you get to Grassington, at Threshfield, take the B6160 signposted Kettlewell through Upper Wharfedale, past Kilnsey, through Kettlewell, Starbotton and Buckden. Continue on the B6160 over the tops out of upper Wharfedale as the road then drops down into Bishopdale. Continue along the same road, passing Thoralby signposted off to the left. Shortly afterwards you come to West Burton. After the village sign, the road comes to a sharp right and immediate sharp left bend. On the sharp left bend, take the turning right which is the main entry to the village.
